eat and what to do when traveling in style:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">On our trip along the Californian coast from north to south my husband and I reached the last station after starting in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2017\/11\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast.html\">Mendocino<\/a> via San Francisco (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2017\/11\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast_29.html\">hotels<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2017\/12\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast.html\">restaurants<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2018\/01\/a-california-road-trip-along-coast.html\">activities<\/a>), a stop in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.swisstraveler.net\/2018\/01\/a-california-trip-along-coast-third_31.html\">Cambria<\/a> and several ones in Greater Los Angeles. San Diego, the state\u2019s second largest city and the so-called <\/span><a name=\"more\"><\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\">birthplace of California is especially known for one asset, its mild climate year-round. Tourism is a major industry here, but this city is also home to a large active naval fleet, which one cannot help to notice as a traveler.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , 'helvetica' , sans-serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"San_Diego_features\"><\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\"> <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/>San Diego features<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">While concentrating this time more on general sights, we put a focus more on family things on our last trip as traveling with a small child. This included the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and SeaWorld, both worthwhile doing activities when being on family vacation.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">On our current trip, we followed the tracks of the early settlers and went first to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parks.ca.gov\/?page_id=663\">Old Town San Diego State Historic Park<\/a>. You find here many preserved historic buildings of San Diego\u2019s early days from 1820 to 1870 reflecting the Spanish and Mexican heritage but also lots of tourist restaurants and shops. So, after strolling along the rows of houses, we went on to the next site of importance, the New Town.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-T-diJrdceQ8\/WpWLgSX8Q-I\/AAAAAAAAD50\/1DYKBhaymB4txeyaxsRzkGQbpiSJxtaLgCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_24a2.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-T-diJrdceQ8\/WpWLgSX8Q-I\/AAAAAAAAD50\/1DYKBhaymB4txeyaxsRzkGQbpiSJxtaLgCEwYBhgL\/s1600\/fullsizeoutput_24a2.jpeg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1060\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">At the time, it was decided to shift the center of San Diego to this waterfront location, nowadays better known as\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.gaslamp.org\/\">Gaslamp Quarter<\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\"> in Downtown. Its development started in the 1860s as <\/span><b style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\">New Town<\/b><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\"> and eclipsed Old Town as the city\u2019s core. It includes 94 historic buildings of which many were built in the Victorian Era. After a period of urban decay, this neighborhood underwent some renewal works and was restored to its former glory. Unfortunately, the choice of such lodging for discerning travelers is not that abundant in San Diego.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">One recommended place to stay is <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.org\/explore\/coastal\/coronado.aspx\">Coronado<\/a><\/b>, a resort city across the San Diego Bay from downtown San Diego. It is home to 3 major resorts, the famous but unfortunately a bit run-down Hotel Del Coronado, the Coronado Island Marriott and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loewshotels.com\/coronado-bay-resort\">Loews <strong>Coronado<\/strong> Bay Resort<\/a>. The latter was our choice when we were in town when we had a small child (quite a long time ago), but my research on TripAdvisor shows that it is still a good option when seeking an upscale hotel in a quiet location that is not too far away from Downtown San Diego (ranks number one in 4-star segment). My husband and I are such travelers and opted for it on our last visit to San Diego. Unfortunately, the area cannot quite keep up with the hotel, as this neighborhood is known for being one of the main centers of nightlife in town, and this especially for a younger crowd.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">Having said this, a nice thing to do is strolling along the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sandiegocoastlife.com\/attractions\/san-diego-coast\/boardwalk-ocean-front-boardwalk.html\">Ocean Front Walk<\/a>, running about 3.2 miles (5 kilometers) along the beach to the Mission Bay, which is almost always very busy. <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">A community, which pleases travelers in style, is the neighboring <b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiego.org\/explore\/coastal\/la-jolla.aspx\">la Jolla<\/a><\/b>, already mentioned in the previous section. It is a beautiful seaside village popular as domicile for affluent people. Although being foodies, we were not willing to drive around the city in search of best dining-spots and instead settled on the local dining scene. However, this was not an easy task as this community is rather geared towards younger folks looking for a quick bite, so fine dining opportunities are scarce. Nonetheless, there are some finds.<\/span><br \/>\n<span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">The nearest to Tower23 hotel and attached to it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.t23hotel.com\/jrdn\/\">JRDN Surf \u2013 Sky \u2013 Spirit<\/a> restaurant, a high-end dining with a fancy ocean view. Modern Californian food is on offer here, well prepared and nicely arranged, in a casual yet sophisticated ambiance.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><a style=\"margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-34E3q3JMabY\/WpWRnlB-URI\/AAAAAAAAD6Q\/8YXzs6PgfyEzzQFjRjGTQZFQBNvokD5wACLcBGAs\/s1600\/IMG_1193.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-34E3q3JMabY\/WpWRnlB-URI\/AAAAAAAAD6Q\/8YXzs6PgfyEzzQFjRjGTQZFQBNvokD5wACLcBGAs\/s1600\/IMG_1193.JPG\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"1200\" data-original-width=\"1600\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">Another recommended dining-spot is <\/span><a style=\"font-family: Arial, sans-serif;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thefishery.com\/\">The Fishery<\/a><span style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif;\">, located a few blocks from the ocean in North Pacific Beach. This is the place to indulge in great seafood as it is not only a restaurant but there is also a warehouse with freshest fish behind it. The atmosphere is pleasant, and the chef knows how to prepare seafood in an interesting way. <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">A good place for breakfast and probably lunch as well (we only had breakfast here twice) is <a href=\"http:\/\/isabelscantinasd.com\/\">Isabel\u2019s Cantina<\/a>, which serves Latin-Asian fusion dishes in a very casual ambiance in some sort of a converted garage. Staff is easy-going yet welcoming, and there are also healthy options available.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Overall\"><\/span><strong><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\"> <br class=\"avia-permanent-lb\" \/>Overall<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div><span lang=\"EN-US\" style=\"font-family: 'arial' , sans-serif; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;\">San Diego is a large city but not as busy as other metropolises of its size. It is somewhat relaxed, easy-going, maybe because of its ideal climate or its proximity to Mexico. Be it as it may, it is worthwhile visiting, although it is not exactly a heaven for travelers looking for luxury hotels on the beach and a vibrant foodie\u2019s scene.
